I have here a good example of a visually pleasing timeline which also aggregates lots of information. It has been done (by my daughter Flavia!) with a great tool: TimelineJS.
Interestingly, it uses Google Drive to store a spreadsheet containing all the timeline data: date points, images, information, etc.
